The Power of Full Range of Motion

There's a growing amount of research that shows training the joint through full range of motion elicits superior results compared to partial ranges of motion. In 2023 a group of researchers, in the international journal of strength and conditioning published a study demonstrating that enhanced results in strength, speed, power, muscle size and body composition are gained from training full ROM rather than partial range of movement.

What is full ROM?

Range of motion is the total distance you move in a movement. Full range of motion in strength training is moving safely through the joint or joints full physiological and capable range of motion, comfortably with good technique.

What does training through full ROM mean for you?

  1. More muscle engagement: Full ROM exercises stimulate more muscle, tendon, ligament and bone tissue, giving you a more comprehensive workout. This unfortunately means that your squats might feel harder next time, but it’s all for the greater good.

  2. Enhanced adaptations: By engaging the full range of motion, you're reducing the risk of potential injuries as you are exposing your tissues to a broader range of force. This force creates an adaptation in the tissues with the aim that these tissues become more resilient and robust to those forces and positions down the line.

  3. Functional strength: Unlike partial movements, full ROM improves your strength throughout the entire range of motion – that's strength you can use in real life!

  4. Improved range of motion: Strength training has been shown to be as, if not more, effective at improving range of motion compared with stretching alone as well as all of the other benefits listed above.
